Getting an oil boiler through a winter in the rural Vale
Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read
Out in the Vale, around Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and the villages between, plenty of homes rely on oil. Winter brings a few problems that town houses on mains gas never think about. A little preparation in the autumn goes a long way.
Order oil before you need it
When the first cold snap arrives, demand for heating oil goes up and deliveries can take longer. Ordering in good time also keeps the tank from running low, which stops sludge from the bottom being drawn into the line.
Have the service done before the cold
The best time for an oil boiler service is late summer or autumn, before the heating is working hard. Any worn parts are spotted while the weather is still kind, rather than on the first frosty morning.
Watch the condensate pipe
Modern condensing oil boilers produce water as they run, which drains away through a plastic condensate pipe. Where that pipe runs outside, it can freeze in a hard frost and stop the boiler. If it happens, pouring warm water (never boiling) along the outside section usually clears it.
Keep the route to the tank clear
A tank behind a hedge or at the end of a muddy track is no help if the delivery driver cannot reach it. Keep the way clear and the fill point easy to find.
If the boiler stops
Check the tank level, check the controls are calling for heat, and press the reset button once at most. If it will not run, turn it off and call us on 07712 646488. Our team is now registered to work on oil boilers, and every oil job starts with a site visit.
