What happens at an oil boiler service
Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read
An oil boiler burns a liquid fuel, and that leaves more behind inside the boiler than gas does. That is the main reason a yearly service matters so much on oil. Our team is now registered to work on oil boilers, servicing included, and like every oil job it starts with a visit.
Why oil boilers need servicing every year
As oil burns, it leaves soot and deposits on the parts that matter most: the burner, the combustion chamber and the heat exchanger. A little is normal. A year’s worth left in place makes the boiler work harder, burn more oil to give the same heat, and start to misbehave on cold mornings when you need it most.
Most manufacturers also expect a yearly service to keep their warranty valid, so a skipped service can cost you more than the oil.
What a proper oil boiler service should cover
Every boiler is different, but a thorough oil service generally includes:
- Cleaning the combustion chamber and heat exchanger
- Checking and cleaning the burner, and replacing the parts on it that wear out
- Checking the oil filter on the supply line
- Testing the controls and the safety devices
- Checking the flue
- Measuring how cleanly the boiler is burning, then adjusting it
At the end you should be told plainly how the boiler is doing, and if anything needs attention, what it is and why.
Signs it is overdue
- A smell of oil or fumes near the boiler
- Black soot around the flue outside
- The boiler is noisier than it used to be, or rumbles when it lights
- It takes several tries to fire, or locks out
If you notice any of these, book a visit sooner rather than later. If you smell fumes, turn the boiler off and keep the room aired.
