Signs your oil boiler needs replacing, not another repair
Updated 1 October 2026 · 2 minute read
Oil boilers can run for a long time if they are looked after, but none of them last for ever. In the farms and houses on the hills around Maesteg and the Llynfi valley, an old boiler giving up in January is the last thing anyone wants. These are the signs that it may be time to plan a replacement.
It keeps breaking down
One repair in a few years is normal. Several in a season is a pattern. Each call-out adds up, and the money might be better spent on a boiler you can rely on.
Parts are getting hard to find
On older models, some parts are no longer made. When a repair depends on finding a second-hand part, it is a good time to think ahead.
Your oil use has crept up
If you are filling the tank more often for the same comfort, the boiler may be burning less efficiently than it used to. Older non-condensing oil boilers lose more of their heat up the flue than modern condensing ones.
It smokes, smells or rumbles
Soot around the flue, a smell of fumes, or a rumble when it lights all point to a boiler that is not burning cleanly. Get it checked whatever its age, and turn it off if you smell fumes.
Hot water and heating are not keeping up
If the house never quite warms up, or the hot water runs out sooner than it used to, the boiler may no longer suit the home.
